Install the font detector.
Point at any text on any page, or select it, and the extension names the family that is actually rendering it — with its weight, size and line-height. One more click sends it to Typecase.
It is not on the Chrome Web Store yet — that listing has not been submitted. Until it is, loading it unpacked is the way in, and it takes about a minute.
Loading it, once
- Download and unzip the file. Keep the folder somewhere you will not delete — Chrome loads it from where it sits, so moving or removing it later removes the extension.
- Open
chrome://extensions. - Turn on Developer mode, top right.
- Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Pin Typecase to your toolbar, and click it to sign in.
Signing in is the address you bought Typecase with. A six-digit code arrives by email; type it in and that is the setup done. There is no password.
Using it
Point at text. Alt+Shift+D, or Point at text in the popup. Whatever is under the pointer is outlined and named as you move. Click to keep one, Esc to stop.
Read a selection. Select text and press Alt+Shift+F.
Always on is optional and off until you grant it. Turn it on from the popup for one site or for every site, and the badge appears the moment you select text. Chrome asks first, and the same button takes it back.
The toolbar icon lists every distinct font on the page, most-used first.
What it does with your browsing
Nothing leaves your machine except when you ask it to. By default the extension can read only the page you are looking at, at the moment you invoke it; it asks for no site access at install, and “always on” is a permission you grant per site and can revoke.
It never downloads a page’s font file — not the page’s, not anyone’s. When you click Open in Typecase it opens a link carrying font metadata only: the family, the stack, weight, size, line-height, and up to 120 characters of the text you pointed at.
Updating it
Download this file again, replace the folder, and press the reload arrow on the card at
chrome://extensions. When the Web Store listing is live, updates arrive on their own —
leave your email on the site and I will write when it is.
